Meet your new queen: History’s made at Miss England 2009
Black Community celebrates the First Black Miss England
Black Community in the UK is celebrating the victory of Rachel Christie, as the First Black Miss England. The 20-year-old Rachel made it into history books by becoming the first black woman ever to win the title of Miss England.
Rachel who is also Miss London City is a determined heptathlete hoping to make her mark in the London Olympics in 2012. Her graceful looks, her charming personality and her aspirations to become a top athlete are some of the many reasons why she was chosen.
Rachel’s “ambition in life is to compete and win gold in the 2012 Olympics which is going to be held in London.” She says she “would also love to do well in Miss England. I want to be successful in whatever I choose to do in life.”
Miss England 2009 was held as a two day event on 19th and 20th July at the London Hilton Metropole Hotel, Edgware road, London.
Rachel’s uncle is British Olympic gold medallist Linford Christie, who is the most decorated British athlete.
“There seems to be a controversy surrounding her win. Would she have won if she wasn’t related to Linford Christie? We will never know, only the judges have the answer. I have been in communication with the organiser of Miss England (Angie Beasley) in the past and she seems to me as a professional in her job. I don’t think she would do anything meaningless to jeopardise the credibility of Miss England beauty pageant. I wish Rachel all the best in her new found duties as a queen. She needs to wear that crown with great pride and without fear,” says Miss Pauline Long, Founder of Mr & Miss East Africa UK.
Rachel’s victory has also been welcomed by Mr. Sola Oyebade, Chief Executive of Mahogany Model Management. “On the 20th July 2009 Rachael Christie made history by being the first ever African Caribbean to win the coveted title of Miss England. This is an historic achievement and something that everyone in England should be proud of. Mahogany Models believe that this is the beginning of many more great achievements for models and persons of colour and this would go a long way into making strives into the fashion industry. Rachael Christie is a bright, beautiful and intelligent woman who is not only a beauty queen but also a woman with a burning ambition who intends to represent Great Britain during the 2012 Olympics. Mahogany and I am sure the whole of the UK would like to send out our hearty congratulations to Rachael and wish her well,” he says.
Ms. Rosemary Chileshe, International supermodel and CEO of Swanilenga Group also rejoices in Rachel’s victory. “Big congratulations to Rachel Christie for winning Miss England 2009! Like all the Miss England finalists, Rachel was always a winner from the beginning with the Miss London City title under her belt. As a former Miss Zambia World contestant, I wish her the very best for Miss World 2009. With her self belief and determination to succeed in whichever field or tasks she embarks on, coupled with her unique talents within the sports industry, she will definitely be outstanding in the fast track challenges. All the best Rachel, be sure to enjoy yourself at every stage and enjoy the beauty of what South Africa (home to Miss World 2009) has to offer!”
